Starting in Virginia

First Course with the New Handbook

Flower Show School is a series of four courses that covers the principles of floral design as well as fundamentals of plant life. Training is given in judging design and horticulture.  Courses may be taken in any order and may be attended by any garden club member. 

After successful completion of the four courses and after passing the reading exam, a member may become an accredited judge.

FSS is open to all.  You may attend a single session or entire course.

Flower Show School – Course I

August 28-31, 2017

Kirkley Hotel and Conference Center, 2900 Chandlers Mountain Road, Lynchburg, VA 25402

Flower Show Procedure & Design: Frances Thrash will be introducing the new handbook as well as teaching Traditional Designs with an emphasis on elements and principles. Top NGC awards will be discussed as well as judging procedures and qualities.

Horticulture:  Darlene Newel will be teaching cut perennials and bulbous plants with an emphasis on hostas and dahlias. She will also discuss awards, judging procedures and horticulture vocabulary as well as plant nomenclature.


Monday, August 28

3:45 – 6 pm    Flower Show Procedure

Tuesday, August 29

8:45 am – 3:30 pm   Horticulture

4 – 6 pm    Point Scoring Test

Wednesday, August 30

8:45 am – 3:30 pm     Design

4 – 6 pm Point Scoring Test

Thursday, August 31

9 am – 12 noon Written Examination
